Reception - Hedgehog Class - Archive 2022-23

7 July 2023 - Hedgehog assembly

This week we were very excited to share our work with you in our class assembly. The children have worked so hard this year and it was lovely to celebrate how far they have come in Reception!

30 June 2023 - Colour Mixing

This week we have been experimenting with mixing colours to see what other colours we can make. We have also really enjoyed learning how to programme Beebots. We have been able to move them forwards and backwards and also make them turn.
 

23 June 2023 - Odds and evens


This week we have been investigating odd and even numbers. We have shared different amounts to see if they can be shared equally or not, we have also used numicon to help us. We have continued our learning on 'Down by the sea' and have begun to look at pirates. We really enjoyed making boats and seeing if they would float.

 

16 June 2023 - Somebody Swallowed Stanley

This week we have been learning about pollution and reading 'Somebody swallowed Stanley'. We thought about how special the ocean is and ways we can look after it. We enjoyed making our own Stanley and we made pictures of fish by weaving different coloured paper. We have also learnt about halving different amounts in maths.

9 June 2023 - The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch

This week we have started our learning on our new topic 'Down by the sea'. We have really enjoyed reading 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and we worked hard to build our own lighthouses. We also talked about the lunch in the story and made our own sandwiches, we then enjoyed a picnic on the field!

26 May 2023 - Finding one more

This week in Literacy we have been reading 'The Growing Story' and using the words big and bigger in our writing. In maths we have been looking at finding one more and teen numbers. We have used tens frames and minibeasts to help us with our counting. Some of us continued our maths outside and practised writing our teen numbers in the creative area.

19 May 2023 - Our new garden

This week we have introduced Hedgehog class to some new, updated areas in our garden. It has been lovely to see them enjoying the new resources. They have been drawing minibeasts in the creative area and writing labels for them, singing and dancing on the stage and using the tape measures to see how long their building was in the construction area!

12 May 2023 - Butterflies

We have continued to learn about life cycles this week and have learnt all about butterflies. We have read 'The very hungry caterpillar' and we have used butterflies to look at symmetry in maths. We have also made some beautiful butterflies in our creative area.

 

5 May 2023 - King's Coronation

We have enjoyed learning about the King's Coronation this week. We learnt all about the Crown Jewels and the Coronation ceremony. We had a lovely time on Friday when the Junior's came to celebrate Parkgate Day with us. We dressed up as Prince's and Princesses and enjoyed our street party.

28 April 2023 - Lifecycles

We have enjoyed watching the chicks grow in our classroom, we have noticed how they have changed and how their feathers have started to grow. They were very fast and very noisy!
We have also looked at the lifecycles of frogs and we now have some tadpoles in our classroom. We are waiting for them to change into froglets.

21 April 2023 - Chicks

This week we have been very excited by the arrival of our eggs in school. We have been learning all about the life-cycle of a chick and have really enjoyed looking at the eggs and watching them hatch.

31 March 2023 - Happy Easter!

We have had been working hard this week and have enjoyed learning all about Easter. We have shared the Easter story and we have been weaving paper to make Easter eggs. We have also been playing Easter games to help us learn our tricky words. We all looked wonderful in our Easter bonnets, ready for our Easter bonnet parade.

24 March 2023 - Maths

This week we have been looking at subitising numbers and we have worked hard with our numicon making parts of a whole. We have also continued to look at spring and have made spring flowers, first with playdough and then with clay. 

 

17 March 2023 - Growing

This week we have been thinking about Spring, and despite the rainy weather we went on a spring hunt around the school to see if we could spot any signs of spring. We saw some blossom, daffodils, some buds and even a nest high up in the trees. We also grew our own plants and are watching carefully to see when they start to grow. 

 

10 March 2023 - Library Visit

This week we had a lovely morning visiting the library. We enjoyed our snowy walk and we sat and listened to the stories and enjoyed reading with our friends.
We also had an author visit our class. We learnt all about what an author is and listened to her read one of her books. 

3 March 2023 - Zim Zam Zoom!

We’ve been very busy in Hedgehog class this week. We have really enjoyed our book ‘Zim, Zam, Zoom!’ We have shared lots of poems together and have learnt our special poem, ‘Lullaby for a Woolly Mammoth’ which we performed in assembly.
We enjoyed coming to school in our pyjamas and found lots of places to share books with our friends!

10 February 2023 - Staying Safe Day

We have had another lovely week in Hedgehog class. We learnt all about different ways to stay safe and thought about people who helped to keep us safe. We made a hand print to show the people we could trust. 
We have also continued to enjoy our castles topic, making crowns and shields. 

3 February 2023 - A Royal Week!

We have had a lovely week exploring our topic on castles. We have a new castle role play area and we have spent time cutting and making crowns. We have been looking at non-fiction books and learning lots about castles and all of the different people that we would find in one.

 

27 January 2023 - Counting!

We have had another good week in Hedgehog class. We have been learning about traditional tales and have read The Three Little Pigs. We have also been practising our counting and finding the difference between two numbers. During challenge time, we continued practising our counting by playing an interactive maths game on the board.

20 January 2023 - Chinese New Year

We have had lots of fun in our new home corner this week. We have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We have shared some books and looked at pictures to learn lots about the celebration. 

13 January 2023 - Barnaby Bear’s birthday

This week it was Barnaby Bear’s birthday! We have been enjoying role play picnics so we set up a Teddy bear’s picnic to help Barnaby celebrate. Happy Birthday Barnaby! We have also started to learn about houses and homes, and made some 2d and 3d representations of our homes.

16 December 2022 - Fun in the snow!

We had lots of fun on Monday when we woke up to a snowy day! We put our wellies on and wrapped up warm to go outside and enjoy the snow. We made snowmen and looked at our footprints in the snow. 

9 December 2022 - Our Nativity

We were so proud to show off our singing, dancing and acting skills at our nativity this week. Some of us were very nervous but we all did an amazing job! 
Thank you all for coming to watch us, we hope you enjoyed it. 

2 December 2022 - Keeping active

This week we have been working hard in our gymnastics lesson and have been practising our rolling and our balances. We have also been making collages of nocturnal animals and enjoying books about owls in our book corner. 

25 November 2022 - Nocturnal animal

This week Hedgehogs have continued our learning theme of light and dark, learning about nocturnal animals. We have practised our collaging skills using different materials to decorate owl pictures. They look very effective!

18 November 2022 - Shadow Puppet Theatre

This week in Hedgehog we have continued to learn about light and dark. We made shadow puppet theatres using cardboard boxes and small world toys. We really enjoyed showing off our learning to our grown-ups at the class assembly on Friday!

11 November 2022 - Phonics

We have been working hard in phonics this week. We have played phonics games and practised all of the sounds we have learnt so far. We have also been learning about light and dark and we have been finding out about different sources of light.

4 November 2022 - Pumpkin Soup

This week we have been reading the book ‘Pumpkin Soup’ by Helen Cooper. We have acted out the story and talked about friendships. We also made our own pumpkin soup! We chopped the vegetables and enjoyed tasting our soup.
